Net Worth – Atlantic Division – Toronto Raptors back in the hunt

The Raptors were another victor in the summer of 2009. When Orlando Magic free agent Hedo Turkoglu joined the Raptors after a mind-numbing sign-and-trade, the Raptors took another step towards contention in the East. Some questioned if Turkoglu was worth the 5 year, $60million dollar deal he was given. And based on a report on RealGM.com, Orlando general manager Otis Smith said to Blazers GM Kevin Pritchard he had “caught a break” when Portland’s negotiations with Turkoglu fell through. Smith also allegedly told Pritchard that he “wasn’t missing out on anything.” In today’s economy, that monster of a contract will always raise eyebrows, but Turkoglu’s playoff heroics cannot be questioned. He should breathe some life into the young Raptors, who made some nice moves this summer.

Speaking of questionable contracts, the Raptors and Andrea Bargnani have agreed to a five-year, $50 million contract extension beginning in 2010-2011. Bargnani, a former number one overall pick, is showing a steady increase in ability as he matures. He averaged 15 point and 5 boards per game last year, and is a mismatch problem for teams due to his versatility as a 4/5. The Raptors also signed combo guard Jarrett Jack, who can fill in for Jose Calderon or even start at the 2.

Guard/Forward DeMar DeRozan was taken with the ninth pick by the Raptors in the NBA Draft. DeRozan is an unbelievable athletic specimen who could potentially start at shooting guard in Toronto. DeRozan, a  Southern California product, has been compared to Vince Carter for his athleticism. At the Chicago pre-draft camps, he responded to this by saying “I think I can jump higher than Vince Carter did.” What’s even more insane about making that comment, is that it may be truth. Though not a consistent shooter yet, he should improve with time. If he doesn’t start, DeRozan should see quality tick at the two even as a rookie and is a decent sleeper for rookie of the year.

For the Raptors to ultimately be competitive, they will lean on their venerable all-star Chris Bosh, who is coming off an underrated 22/10 season. Just as important will be the health of Jose Calderon. Calderon was not at 100% last season, but is alleged to be in shape again. He had good numbers (12.8 points, 8.9 assists) and can lead the Raptors back to the playoffs if he remains healthy for the entire season.
